Once again I headed down to our local park with camera in hand and photographed the Relay for Life. It's a wonderful event where cancer survivors and people whose lives are touched by cancer come together to walk all night along a lit path of candle light, raising money for cancer research.

I just wandered along grabbing shots that appealed to me.

As I walk along the thousands of candles that proclaimed people's hurt and triumph I tear up every time. Luminaries that tell of people's pain and loss, success and joys of cancer beat - I weep.

These are shoes that I have worn too often...
...and yet.... and yet the souls are strangely comfortable...

My Favorite Christmas Gift

My wife has bought me some of the coolest Christmas gifts over the years. Some of my favorites have been the iTouch, or another year a BBQ that sparked my interest in cooking with the flame (oh so tasty. She surprised me big time with that one. Never saw it coming, she got all the extras: glazes, sauces, rubs and wood chips - everything to peak my interest, and if you follow my blog or facebook - you know we love to cook outdoors and create wonderful dishes)

This year I'm going to have to go with something that came from somewhere else. (Sorry my Love, new TV we got is great, but this is... this is different.) Let me explain.

Many years ago during the late 80's, early 90's I was in a little blues band. Just a group of friends that decided to create Shotgun Angel and play some rocking blues around southern Manitoba in whatever venue we could find. Those were some great years of learning and getting into the music, but we practiced a lot and had our "set" of songs which I loved. But it was always "those" songs we played. (still love them today, but there is so much great music and songs out there).

After we disbanded, I ended up playing guitar in a worship band for the next 12 years along side various musicians of all caliber. I really enjoyed my time there but it still wasn't the music that my heart longs for and loves, nor did it compare to the days of old with my band.The gel of playing together wasn't quite there.

Fast forward to Dec 2010, a small restaurant in La Broquerie, Sunday's 3-8:00 at Raevin's Diner. A group of musicians that play together with a synergy that is well beyond the norm. Are we the best in the land? Far from it. But there is something great, almost magical when I get to sit in and play. For we are doing songs that half the band may or may not know, styles of music that I'm not the most comfortable with (country, trucker tunes, or old train ballads). In fact there are times I don't know where the next chord is, or what it happens to be. I'm thinking, "crap, I've never heard this song in my life! what can I do? how am I going to pull it off?"

And yet... and yet we do. Somehow deep inside you something comes out, and every once and a while it's magic. Big wonderful Stevie Ray Vaughan solos of killer guitar? No, just a wonderful gelling of music and space - a synergy of players that goes so deep it's almost spiritual. A give and take of allowing the next person the space to play, supporting them with the lightest of touch. Music that just comes from the soul. There is no practicing, no "let's go back and do that again". It's all about,"what can I do in that very moment of a song that I don't know, to make it my own?"

This is my favorite Christmas gift of 2010. To take me to a place where you are able to escape all the pressures and worries of life, and to play purely for the simple joy of it. To dig deep and create something from your heart. To listen to the stories that are being told as each player steps out - to enjoy the music as a whole. Pure. Simple. Joy.

I have found what I have been longing for, after 22 years - I'm home.

Last weekend Des and I headed up province to a wonderful location for a small and intimate wedding - Hecla Island. The last time I was up there was '88 for a photo convention. I must say I really miss it. It's a nice drive and a better journey's end.

Johanna and Jason have charmed me over the last year with their wonderful Scottish accents and pointed me to better Scotch. He sounds like David Coulthard and looks a little like Mic Dreamy from Grey's.

All the best to you two, thanks for the wonderful time on the island. The view was great, the food better and the company a treat.

The Last 3 Minutes

The Last 3 Minutes is a beautiful short film by cinematographer Shane Hurlbut, the cinematographer of Terminator Salvation. It was shot using the Canon 5D Mark II, and was sponsored by Canon to show off the latest firmware that enables 24p (frames per second) recording, giving it a “movie quality”. Filming spanned 17 locations across 4 1/2 days, and a wide assortment of Canon prime L lenses were used.

The present day portion of the film in the beginning was shot at 24p, while the flashbacks were filmed at 30p and converted to 24p in order to produce a dreamlike quality. You can read more about how the film was made on Hurlbut’s blog

I helped out with lighting and shot a few images as well.

Interview several photographers, and select someone who makes you feel very comfortable. When you "click" with the photographer, chances are your photos will also look more natural.
Before you hire, it's important to closely consider the portfolio of anyone you are thinking of enlisting for the job. Consider the following when looking at their work: Are there a variety of poses and expressions illustrated? Do the people look relaxed? Is there a variety of locations and set-ups? The final choice of photographer will be influenced by your taste in photography and the theme of your wedding day.

What to Ask Before You Pick a Shooter

Can you see samples of the photographer's wedding work? If you're dealing with a studio, will the person you speak with during a consultation actually be the photographer assigned to your wedding day?
How much experience has the photographer had with weddings? Ask for testimonials or client referrals and call a couple of these references.
How are fees charged: by the hour or for a flat-fee package? Make certain to detail any additional costs; from special techniques used, to types of wedding albums that will be provided, right down to the photographers' travel or parking expenses.
What options are available? Can your photographs be a combination of colour and black and white?
Can they suggest a location for pictures to be taken between the ceremony and the reception?
How will the photographer and his or her assistant dress on the day of the wedding?

Photography is one of the most important (and can be the most expensive) aspect of your wedding planning. The reality is, long after the big day is over many of your memories will come from the photos, which you’ll also want to print, display and share with your friends and family!

Photographer Haley Shandro of Shandro Photo in Edmonton, Alberta recently wrote a blog post for the Professional Photographers of Canada giving tips on why and how you should budget for a wedding photographer. Here is what she said:

Do I need a professional?

My uncle can do it for me. These days anyone with a camera thinks that they are a photographer, but a professional has the experience, equipment, personality, and backup equipment to ensure that your photos are stunning and safeguarded.

How much is too much?

A few years ago, you could hire a great wedding photographer for $2,000-$3,000. These days, people are spending more on their photographer, and it’s not unusual to pay $6,000+ for an amazing professional photographer for full day coverage with an album. Why is it ‘so expensive’? There is a difference between amazing photography and poor photography. The talent of a true professional photographer can be the difference between ho-hum photos and stunning images of your most important day. Photography is one field where you do get what you pay for.

How much coverage do I need?

Gone are the days of stiff portraits after a traditional ceremony. Many brides now want documentary-style coverage of their wedding. However, not everyone wants photos of getting ready. Or, your budget might not allow for hiring a pro for the whole day. Rather than hiring a mediocre photographer for the whole day, consider spending a bit extra and hiring a professional for less time.

Do I get a disc of images?

To some brides a disc is important, to some it is not. If you are a bride who values having a digital archive of your photos and the ability to print what you want, check to see if the disc is included, or if there is an extra charge. If the initial package price is low but there are fees after the fact, this may affect how a photographer will fit into your budget. Also, understand that there is a difference between a disc of high-resolution files that you can print to a large size, or downsized files (or low resolution) that can only be used for the web or small prints.

Do I need a wedding album?

You may have intentions of printing off wedding photos for your friends and family, or putting together your own wedding album. However, many brides find that after the wedding life gets busy, priorities shift, and the disc of wedding images gets put on the shelf. Also, technologies change and that disc will eventually be obsolete or may deteriorate. Files on a disk now may not be able to be opened in 15 years. Anyone still using 5 1/2" floppies? A good quality album will safeguard your memories for years. You should ensure your budget has enough room for a professional wedding album.

Can I personalize my wedding with photography?

You can combine other items from your budget, such as a guest book, thank you cards, and even invitations into your photography budget. Ask your photographer to do custom extras with your engagement and wedding photos.

Shouldn’t I get a discount for getting married on a Sunday or in the winter?

A photographer works just as hard on a Saturday in the summer as on a Sunday in December. You shouldn’t necessarily expect a discount if you’re not getting married on a Saturday.

While we were out shooting the TTD session in the desert I took a few landscapes of the canyon. I really should have done more, but it was a little crazy with all the people in our entourage. I was concentrating on the brides so I didn't do all the scenic photos that I may have liked.

I always talk about trying to do landscapes (actually any photography) in wonderful light - something unique. Well this has neither - shot at 10:00 in the morning. I would love to go back and do it right - at the magic times of the day.

Manuel Sousa set up a Trash The Dress shoot in Las Vegas while attending WPPI. (thank you Manny for all the hard work). The images turned out fantastic! He got Steph (one of his brides from last year) to do a trash the dress shoot. Talk got around and before you knew it we had 6 brides, 2 models, 8 photographers and one videographer. The party just got bigger and better as we headed out to Red Rock Canyon in NV.

W-List does Vegas

Last week, the annual conference and trade show for WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) was held in Las Vegas. All of us Photographers from The W List decided to head out to Vegas with the other 14 000 odd photographers from around the world.

A trip to Red Rock Canyon with 6 brides that Manny grouped together for a TTD shoot was a great time. What a fantastic location! Thanks to all the girls that came out for the shoot - I had a wonderful time with everyone. And thanks to Marlene for grabbing shots of us.

Bye Bye Snow

I often get questions about shooting weddings in winter, whether the bride will stand out from the surrounding scenes she's in. It got me wondering, why all the questions? Many inexperienced photographers starting out might make the mistake of not opening up their exposure when shooting in snow. Thus getting gray images instead of white with detail.

Here's a tip brides, if you can see the difference with your eyes, so will the camera. Don't worry about whether red flowers will stand out against a red dress - if you can see them in real life, so will the camera. Not everything like flowers and dresses need to be complementary colors. Working in the same color range is perfectly acceptable, and often beautiful.

These questions brought me to a challenge, shooting snow to show just how subtle the colors can get, with the wonderful gradations from one delicate tone to another. It got me into looking at snow in a new light....

Great Clients - even if they're not mine

One of the things that warms my heart most is when we can provide our clients with an experience and product that blows them away, whether they never thought they could look so fantastic and sexy on their wedding day or they come back after their day and say, "you were the best part of the day, by far the most enjoyable time".

Last week I helped Trevor shoot a behind the scenes video of Kat and Chris's "save the day" video, just so you all could see how it works. Today I received this wonderful email from Kat.

Hi Jeremy!

I just wanted to send you a quick email to thank you so much for coming out to our shoot last week. I just saw the finished products and I am completely blown away!!!! You guys both rocked!!! It was great to meet you and having your input on our day :) I am still so ecstatic about everything! Save the Date Video - Behind the scenes.

On Tuesday, Trevor came out to the Steinbach area to shoot a “Save the Date” video for Katherine & Chris. He asked me to shoot some video of the action behind the scenes. You bet I'll will. We actually had set it up two weeks ago to shoot, but called it off due to -39C temperatures.

When I woke up Tuesday morning to the wonderful hoar frost on the trees - I knew we were going to get some great footage.

BTW, sorry for the lame comment "hang on to your hats". Man, who says that anymore? Anyway, check out the "making of a save the date video". For the finished product that Kat + Chris use instead of a traditional card, click here.

Here are some FAQ about how Jeffrey Martin did it.

How did you create this panorama?

I used a Canon 5d mark 2 and a 70-200mm lens, set to 200mm. The camera was mounted on a robotic device which turned the camera in tiny, precise increments, in every direction. All together, 40 gigabytes of images were shot. These images were then stitched together using PTGui. The resulting panorama was adjusted for color, contrast, sharpness, etc. in Photoshop. Afterwards, the image was cut into lots of “tiles” and uploaded to our server. When you view the image online, you only load a few of these “tiles” at one time.

How long did you spend stitching this panorama?

Between loading the initial raw files into the computer, and having the panorama stitched, it took about a week. It took 3 additional weeks to fine-tune the image.

What kind of computer did you use?

I used a four year-old windows PC with two single-core 3ghz xeon processors and 8GB of RAM. After a week of frustration, I also bought an SSD, which helped to speed up some tasks a bit. If I will make this image again, I will buy a new computer.

What are the dimensions of this panorama, and the size it takes on disk?

The final image exists as a 120 gigabyte photoshop large (PSB) file. It cannot exist as a TIFF or JPEG file because of their size constraints. The panorama online exists as a few hundred thousand small tiles (in JPEG format), and they take up about 1 gigabyte of disk space.

This was complete spur of the moment shooting, I didn't even warn Rebecca - so thanks to her for being a good sport. : ) I just had to try the light.

Not sure if this was my favorite version of a ring light. But it was cool.
